Senator Rubio Marks Constitution Day
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio today released the following video statement marking the 225th Anniversary of the signing of The United States Constitution:
“Today is the anniversary of a great and pivotal moment, not just in the history of our nation, but in the history of the world. On September 17, 1787, 225 years ago today, the Constitutional Convention signed a document unlike any written before by the hands of men. That document, The United States Constitution, set in motion an experiment that was, and still is, a triumph of the God-given rights and freedoms vested in every human being by their creator.
“Today, we mark that moment in history by celebrating Constitution Day. We are reminded of our nation’s first principles, including the Preamble’s commitment to ‘establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity.’ We also celebrate the American principles of freedom, security and limited government.
“When I was sworn in as a United States Senator, I placed my hand on a Bible and took an oath stating that I would ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States.’ A similar or identical oath was taken by every elected official that has ever served in Washington. Yet today we see our Government rapidly expanding in a way that would alarm our founding fathers for how it trivializes the principles of the document they signed two and a quarter centuries ago. Ultimately, our founders wanted to ensure that the American people themselves would be the source of legitimate authority and prosperity, not the government. The American people deserve a government that will live up to this promise.
“I believe in American exceptionalism. To me, and to so many other Americans, the promise enshrined in the Constitution is not an abstract idea but rather a living guarantee that dreams are possible in this country that would never have been possible anywhere else. The document we celebrate today, the Constitution of the United States, is what gave me the chance to live the life I have. One of the primary reasons I ran for the US Senate is to ensure that my children and grandchildren enjoy the same freedoms and opportunities that I did. So on this Constitution Day, let us be reminded of the principles of our founding, the sacrifices of our founders, and the duty we share to ensure the promise of our Constitution lives for many generations to come.”
