Senate Passes Rubio, Kaine Resolution Supporting GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Tim Kaine (D-VA), members of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, issued the following statements after the U.S. Senate passed their resolution supporting GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance (S.Res.511).
“GAVI remains a leading organization in providing critical support to advance global health security by ensuring access to life-saving vaccines and immunizations,” Rubio said. “I’m happy to see the Senate unanimously approved this bipartisan resolution commending GAVI, the Vaccine Alliance, for their efforts to expand vaccines, especially for children, in developing countries.”
“Now more than ever, it’s clear how critical GAVI’s efforts are to expand access to vaccines and immunizations to the world’s most vulnerable,” Kaine said. “Their indispensable work has saved hundreds of millions of children from fatal diseases, and their mission now continues in helping low-income countries respond to the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m proud that the Senate recognized GAVI’s important accomplishments and enduring role in global health.”
“I applaud the Senate passage yesterday of the Senate resolution (S. Res. 511) supporting the role of the United States in helping save lives and address the COVID-19 pandemic through Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance. At a time of international concern over the COVID-19 crisis, this resolution highlights that investments in the development and deployment of vaccines and immunizations enhance global health security by reducing the incidence of deadly and debilitating diseases and containing the spread of infectious diseases before they become pandemic health threats,” said Dr. Seth Berkley, CEO, Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance.
“The successful Gavi replenishment this month will help support countries to immunize more than 300 million more children in the years ahead,” said RESULTS Executive Director Joanne Carter. “RESULTS applauds the passage of S. Res. 511 and now looks to the Senate for supplemental support for Gavi alongside other critical global health priorities in any next COVID-19 response package.”
