Rubio Welcomes DOJ, FBI Reforms to Enhance Compliance, Oversight, and Accountability at the FBI
Miami, FL — U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Acting Chairman Marco Rubio (R-FL) released a statement after the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced key reforms that will empower the FBI to build a more robust internal compliance program and that will ensure, among other things, the accuracy of FISA applications, as well as the active oversight of applications targeting federal elected officials, candidates for federal elected office, and their staffs.
“The reforms announced by the DOJ and FBI are a welcome step forward to address the serious missteps by the Bureau that occurred during the 2016 presidential campaign — mistakes that should never happen again,” Acting Chairman Rubio said. “It’s clear that the FBI seriously abused the FISA process in 2016, including omitting exculpatory information, lying to the court, and altering material presented to the court in order to get a warrant. Additionally, the FBI’s acceptance and willingness to rely on the ‘Steele Dossier’ without verifying its methodology or sourcing is deeply troubling.
“Going forward, I encourage the DOJ and FBI to take further action on the recommendations in Volume 5 of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s bipartisan Russia report to address the FBI’s actions,” Acting Chairman Rubio continued. “The FISA process is a critical tool, but there is still more to be done to ensure it isn’t abused in the future.”
Last month, U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence Acting Chairman Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Vice Chairman Mark Warner (D-VA) released the fifth and final volume of the Committee’s bipartisan Russia investigation titled, “Volume 5: Counterintelligence Threats and Vulnerabilities,” which examines Russia’s attempts to gain influence in the American political system during the 2016 elections.
