Rubio Welcomes Designation of Temporary Protected Status for Eligible Haitian Nationals in the U.S.
Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) welcomed the Department of Homeland Security’s designation granting Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to eligible Haitian nationals residing in the U.S. for a period of 18 months. Rubio has repeatedly advocated for an extension of the measure in order to help the many Haitian nationals who cannot return home due to national disasters, political unrest, and extraordinary conditions in the island. Earlier this year, Rubio co-led a letter urging the Biden Administration to re-designate Haiti for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).
“I welcome the administration’s action to extend Temporary Protected Status for Haitians in the United States. It is clear the conditions in Haiti have not improved, which is why I requested TPS be extended two months ago.”
Rubio is the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
