Rubio Urges Zika Negotiators To Push For Full Funding
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today urged all 33 members of Congress appointed to the conference committee reconciling differences between proposals in the House and Senate to fully fund the fight against the Zika virus. Rubio stressed the importance of acting quickly and ensuring all available resources are used to protect Americans, especially Floridians and Puerto Ricans who may be most impacted.
“As you know, I supported fully funding the fight against Zika with emergency funds to the amount of $1.9 billion, which was calculated by experts in federal public health agencies as the appropriate amount of funds to successfully protect the public health of our country against the imposing threat of Zika,” Rubio wrote in the letter. “I urge you to consider these specific requests as you negotiate the final legislation through this conference as quickly as possible.”
The full text of the letter sent to all 33 conferees is below:
Dear [Name of Conferee],
As you prepare to enter into conference on the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2017 (H.R. 2577), I ask you to consider fully funding the fight against the Zika virus. My home state of Florida, along with Puerto Rico, are expected to be the hardest hit by detrimental impacts of the Zika virus, and it is imperative that Floridians, Puerto Ricans and all Americans are protected by all available resources and courses of action. With the summer mosquito season here, time is of the essence.
As you know, I supported fully funding the fight against Zika with emergency funds to the amount of $1.9 billion, which was calculated by experts in federal public health agencies as the appropriate amount of funds to successfully protect the public health of our country against the imposing threat of Zika. I urge you to consider these specific requests as you negotiate the final legislation through this conference as quickly as possible.
I am available at your convenience to answer any questions related to the Zika outlook for Florida and Puerto Rico, and I thank you in advance for your consideration.
Atentamente,
Marco Rubio
United States Senator
