Rubio Statement on U.S. Sanctions Targeting Cuban Oil Company that Enables Maduro Regime

Jul 3, 2019 | Comunicados de Prensa

Miami, FL — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department, pursuant to Executive Order 13850, announced new sanctions against Cubametales, a Cuban state-controlled oil import and export company, for continuing to illicitly import Venezuelan oil from the Maduro dictatorship. In return for helping Nicolás Maduro and his criminal cronies to evade U.S. sanctions, the Cuban regime is providing the illegitimate Venezuelan dictator with material support, including defense, intelligence and security assistance.
“America continues to increase pressure against Nicolás Maduro’s illegitimate dictatorship and its foreign enablers, including the Cuban regime,” Rubio said. “It’s critical for the free world, including E.U. Member States and Canada, to do the same in support of efforts by the Interim President Juan Guiadó and the Venezuelan people to restore democracy, constitutional order, and human dignity.”
“I also urge the U.S. and other nations to hold accountable Vladimir Putin’s regime and Russian state-controlled entities that have helped Maduro and his cronies to evade oil sanctions and generate illicit revenue,” Rubio continued.
Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
