Rubio Statement On U.S. Military Assistance Package For Israel
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement after the United States and Israel signed a historic, bilateral military assistance package today:
“I am pleased the United States and Israel have reached agreement on a military assistance package of at least $38 billion over the next 10 years. This package is the largest in U.S. history, and represents the American people’s strong commitment to the Israeli people. Right now, Israel faces an unprecedented range of threats, and is surrounded by countries and terrorist groups bent on its destruction. The United States must help Israel maintain the ability to defend itself by whatever means necessary. While I support this agreement, I do not support the Obama Administration’s efforts to limit the role of Congress in providing additional security assistance to Israel. Congress must be able to adjust the levels of our assistance in the years ahead to match security challenges as they evolve.
“The United States has no greater friend than Israel, the Middle East’s only free-market democracy. From missile defense to investments between our two countries, our relationship with Israel is mutually beneficial. On the front line in the battle against radical Islamic terrorists, a strong and secure Israel is absolutely critical to U.S. national security. Too often, however, President Obama has undermined rather than strengthened our relationship with Israel. His disastrous nuclear deal with Iran has yielded billions of dollars for the world’s foremost state sponsor of terrorism and Israel’s greatest enemy, putting our ally at even greater risk. President Obama’s moral equivalence between Israeli and Palestinian leaders who preach violence and hate has caused many Israelis to question the strength of our ties.
“That is why the conclusion of this Memorandum of Understanding with Israel is so important. It further reinforces the United States’ commitment to a robust relationship with Israel and its people, and sends a clear message to the enemies of the Jewish state.”
