Rubio Statement on 2018 Omnibus Spending Bill
Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement after voting in favor of the 2018 omnibus spending bill:
“Over the last five weeks, I have worked with my colleagues, survivors and the family members of the Parkland tragedy to pass consensus laws that will make our schools safer. As a result, I am very proud to see the STOP School Violence Act, Fix NICS Act, and increased resources for the Comprehensive School Safety Initiative pass today as part of the omnibus spending bill. These are important steps to improve the safety of our kids. The single biggest force behind this achievement, though, is the parents and students from the Parkland community who, for at least this moment, set aside their differences so they could come together to fight hard for the things they agreed on. Congress merely followed their lead.
“As a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, I was also able to secure crucial provisions for Florida in this bill. Important resources are dedicated to Everglades restoration, the construction of the Herbert Hoover Dike, the Fort Lauderdale courthouse, fighting the opioid epidemic, a hurricane hunter aircraft, and a long list of Florida military construction projects because of my requests.
“Improving border security, giving our troops a pay raise, taking care of our veterans, and finally funding our nation’s defense at a necessary level are real victories for the American people in this bill.
“However, increasing the federal deficit should not be the asking price for fulfilling our most basic commitments to national security. In fact, a major flaw is that it took excess spending increases and last-second process changes to make good on these priorities.
“I voted for this bill to fulfill my commitment to Floridians to keep our kids safe and uphold basic responsibilities of the federal government to provide for infrastructure and national defense. While this bill is far from perfect, these are real wins in today’s political environment.”
