Rubio Statement Following Organizations’ Call for Clothing Retailers to End Sourcing From Xinjiang
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), author of the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (S.3471), released the following statement on forced labor in Xinjiang. Earlier today, a coalition of civil society organizations and Uyghur human rights groups urged clothing brands and apparel retailers to sever ties with all suppliers linked to human rights violations against Uyghurs and other Turkic minorities currently detained or trafficked in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (XUAR):
“The Chinese government and Communist Party are profiting from the goods made by the forced labor of Uyghurs and other minorities,” Rubio said. “Earlier this year, I was proud to introduce the bicameral and bipartisan Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (S.3471) that would require any corporation seeking to import goods from the XUAR to prove with clear and convincing evidence that the goods were not made with forced labor. State-sponsored forced labor is prevalent in China and the human tragedy unfolding in Xinjiang emphasizes the need for governmental and civil society responses.”
