Rubio: Senate Zika Package Prioritizes Florida, Puerto Rico
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today after the Senate passed a Continuing Resolution (CR) to keep the government open and provide additional resources for the fight against the Zika virus:
“This anti-Zika package rightfully prioritizes Americans in Florida and Puerto Rico, and I’m encouraged my calls for action have been answered, and that real assistance from the federal government is finally on its way. It’s shameful it took so long and that this public health crisis was made worse by people playing political games in Washington. But I’m glad these critical resources are now moving forward so we can help the thousands of Americans suffering from this virus, step up our mosquito eradication efforts, and develop a vaccine to eradicate Zika for good.”
The $1.1 billion anti-Zika package was part of a larger bill to keep the government open beyond September 30, and includes $15 million specifically targeted for states with local transmissions, with Florida being the only such state so far. It also includes $60 million specifically for territories like Puerto Rico, which has the highest number of infected American citizens.
