Washington, D.C. — To honor the two-year anniversary of the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, the United States Senate passed a resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Rick Scott (R-FL). The resolution honors the victims and survivors, expresses gratitude to the emergency medical and health care professionals who responded and cared for the victims, as well as recognizes the strength and resilience of the Parkland community. The resolution passed the Senate unanimously.
“As a father of four, including two who are in high school now, I know that February 14, 2018 is a date I will never forget,” Rubio said. “In the two years that have passed since the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, I have personally gotten to know many of the parents and families who lost loved ones. Working with them to honor the lives of those lost has been a humbling experience, and while I am proud of the results we have achieved to make our schools safer and prevent future tragedies, we still have much work to do. I will continue to work to honor the memories of the 17 victims of this senseless attack in the best way we can: by working to make sure no other families have to suffer like this.”
“Tomorrow marks two years since the tragic shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School,” Scott said. “Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the 17 lives we lost far too soon, and I’m proud to introduce this resolution honoring them today with Senator Rubio. Over the past two years, I’ve worked closely with the families of the victims to make our schools safer and prevent future tragedies. We passed the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act while I was Governor and now I’m fighting for improvements on the federal level, including the Luke and Alex School Safety Act. While our hearts are still heavy with loss we cannot undo, we must do everything in our power to honor the memory of the victims and ensure no family has to go through this pain again.”

Whereas, on February 14, 2018, a mass shooting that took the lives of 17 teachers and students took place at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida;
Whereas the people of the United States continue to pray for the individuals who were affected by this tragedy;
Whereas President Donald Trump stated, “no child, no teacher, should ever be in danger in an American school. No parent should ever have to fear for their sons and daughters when they kiss them goodbye in the morning.”;
Whereas the Parkland community has shown strength, compassion, and unity in the past 2 years; and
Whereas February 14, 2020, marks 2 years since the horrific attack: Now, therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Senate—
(1) honors the memories of the victims of the senseless attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on February 14, 2018, and offers heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathies to the families, loved ones, and friends of the victims;
(2) honors the survivors of the attack and pledges continued support for their recovery;
(3) recognizes the strength and resilience of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School community; and
(4) expresses gratitude to the emergency medical and health care professionals of the Parkland community for their efforts in responding to the attack and caring for the victims and survivors.
