Rubio Renews Support for Bipartisan Bill to Protect Florida Cigar Workers’ Jobs
Washington D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today regarding Senator Bill Nelson’s (D-FL) reintroduction of the Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act (S. 294), bipartisan legislation that would protect Florida workers’ paychecks by exempting large and premium cigars from excessive and overly burdensome U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations and fees:
“There is virtually no corner of Florida that is not being affected by the FDA’s excessive and overly burdensome regulations on local cigar makers, and we must stop federal bureaucrats from putting these small manufacturers out of business and threatening workers’ paychecks. From Tampa to Miami to Orlando, businesses that are historic and cultural institutions are being hurt by these sweeping regulations, and I’m proud to once again partner with Bill Nelson in standing up for Florida workers.”
During an October visit to J.C. Newman Cigar Company in Tampa, Rubio recalled the time he spent as a child sitting on the porch with his grandfather, who smoked cigars and once worked in a cigar factory in Cuba, where he would keep the workers entertained by reading to them.
Cosponsors of the bill include Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV), Steve Daines (R-MT), Bob Casey (D-PA), Cory Gardner (R-CO), John Boozman (R-AR), Jon Tester (D-MT), Mazie Hirono (D-HI) and Dean Heller (R-NV).
