Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement today after the U.S. Senate passed the Countering Iran’s Destabilizing Activities Act (S. 722) by a vote of 98 – 2:
“With this overwhelming, bipartisan vote to impose new sanctions, we’ve sent a powerful message to Iran’s terror-sponsoring regime and Vladimir Putin’s authoritarian government that their aggressive actions and egregious human rights abuses will not be tolerated. The people of Iran and Russia deserve representative democracies that respect their fundamental human rights, adhere to international norms, and advance responsible and constructive foreign and domestic policies.”
In addition to imposing new sanctions against Iran’s ballistic missile program, support for terrorism, and human rights abuses, the bipartisan legislation was amended to codify and expand sanctions against Russia’s occupation and illegal annexation of Ukrainian territory, cyberattacks and interference in foreign elections, and aggression in Syria.
