Rubio Denounces North Korea’s Fifth Nuclear Test
Miami, FL – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) released the following statement today after the North Korean regime conducted a nuclear test, its fifth overall and second this year:
“This nuclear test is just the latest example of the Obama Administration’s failed policy of ‘strategic patience’ with North Korea, which has expanded its nuclear weapons program and increased its missile capabilities while President Obama has stood idly by. The North Korean regime is a thuggish criminal syndicate that brutally represses the North Korean people. Instead of more vague pronouncements about a world without nuclear weapons, we must ensure that there are consequences for North Korea’s actions. The Obama Administration must fully implement the sanctions Congress has passed, including those targeting Chinese entities and individuals who continue to enable North Korea’s destabilizing activities.
“This test is also a reminder of the futility of President Obama’s attempts to elevate international law above U.S. national security, and why I am fighting to preserve the Senate’s constitutional role in approving treaties. The notion that if we unilaterally disarm and limit our capabilities, rogue actors like Kim Jong-un will do the same is fanciful and dangerous. We will continue to stand with South Korea and Japan in countering the increasing threat from the Kim regime. Eight years of this misguided policy has encouraged regimes like North Korea to test America’s resolve and made Americans less safe.”
