Rubio Defends Legislative Prayer From Assault By Liberal Activist Court
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) has filed an amicus brief in the U.S. Supreme Court regarding Town of Greece v. Galloway, a landmark case concerning religious liberty. The New York-based U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit recently ruled that the Town of Greece, New York had violated the U.S. Constitution by allowing town board meetings to be opened with prayer, even though the town’s practice welcomed prayers from members of any religion or denomination as well as reflections from atheists. For example, the town has welcomed Christian, Jewish, and Wiccan prayer. The Supreme Court will take up this case in its upcoming term.
In addition to Rubio, the amicus brief has been signed by Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN), John Barrasso (R-WY), Roy Blunt (R-MO), John Boozman (R-AR), Richard Burr (R-NC), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Jeff Chiesa (R-NJ), Dan Coats (R-IN), Bob Corker (R-TN), John Cornyn (R-TX), Mike Crapo (R-ID), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Mike Enzi (R-WY), Orrin Hatch (R-UT), Deb Fischer (R-NE), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), John Hoeven (R-ND), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Jim Inhofe (R-OK), Mike Johanns (R-NE), Ron Johnson (R-WI), Mike Lee (R-UT), Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Jerry Moran (R-KS), Rob Portman (R-OH), James Risch (R-ID), Pat Roberts (R-KS), Tim Scott (R-SC), John Thune (R-SD), Pat Toomey (R-PA), David Vitter (R-LA), Roger Wicker (R-MS) and Mary Landrieu (D-LA).
The amicus brief is available here.
“This case brings about an historic moment in the effort to preserve the fundamental American principle of religious liberty,” said Rubio. “The Court of Appeals’ decision was flawed in its interpretation of the founders’ intention for religious liberty. America was founded on the ideal that Americans have the right to practice or not practice any religion, not that public forums should be free from religious expression or limited to court-approved prayer. The founders would be alarmed by this effort to block Americans from peacefully expressing their religious sentiments in a free and open forum. I have filed this amicus brief to call attention to the importance of this case for Americans of all faiths and world views who value the uniqueness of America’s promise of religious freedom.”
