Rubio, Cardin, Colleagues Introduce Bill to Reauthorize U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom
The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), created by the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, is a bipartisan commission that monitors and reports on international religious freedom. The commission’s authorization is currently set to expire September 30, 2024.
U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL), Ben Cardin (D-MD), and colleagues, introduced the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom Reauthorization Act of 2024 to reauthorize USCIRF for two additional years.
- “USCIRF continues to lead vital efforts in support, and in defense of, our God-given right to freely live out one’s faith. This reauthorization comes at a time when authoritarian nations worldwide continue to violate and undermine freedom of religion. From Communist China’s forced abortions and sterilization of Uyghur Muslims, to the Nicaraguan regime’s persecution of Catholics, to the Cuban dictatorship’s constant repression of people of faith, to the abhorrent sexual assault of Jewish women by Hamas terrorists, USCIRF’s mission is more important than ever. I’m proud to once again introduce this reauthorization and urge its swift consideration.” – Senator Rubio
Joining Rubio and Cardin in their efforts are Senators Chris Coons (D-CT), Ted Cruz (R-TX), and James Lankford (R-OK). US Representatives Chris Smith (R-NJ) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA) introduced the House companion.
