Rubio calls on Obama to seek extradition of El Chapo
Marco Rubio on Friday called on the Obama administration to quickly seek extradition of the infamous drug lord Mexican authorities recaptured earlier in the day.
Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto on Friday announced that authorities had recaptured Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, who escaped a maximum-security prison in July.
“The Obama Administration should immediately pursue ‘El Chapo’s’ extradition in accordance with our treaty with Mexico,” Rubio, who chairs a Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee, said in a statement. “Not only is he wanted for major crimes in the U.S., but we have the capabilities to bring him to justice.”
El Chapo has already escaped prison twice — through a tunnel last summer and by way of a laundry cart in 2001.
Rubio… reiterated the Obama administration’s need to act quickly, saying federal officials shouldn’t waste the chance to bring El Chapo to justice. “In fact, if the Obama Administration has not already laid the groundwork for this moment, they will have already dropped the ball,” he charged.

Rubio on Friday also hailed El Chapo’s apprehension as “a victory in the fight against the drug cartels that traffic drugs, terrorize the public, and poison the rule of law and democratic order that many generations of Mexicans have worked to achieve.”
“His escape was a serious blow to all those working in good faith within the Mexican government, law enforcement and judiciary to give that nation a better future,” Rubio continued, “and I am pleased to hear he is once again in custody.”
