Rubio Bills To Protect America’s Small Businesses From Cyber Threats Become Law

Two bills to protect America’s small businesses from cyber crimes were signed into law. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) first introduced these bills in March 2019.

El SBA Cyber Awareness Act — Cosponsored by Senators Jim Risch (R-ID) and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the new law requires the Small Business Administration (SBA) to develop a cyber strategy, examine its IT system components’ country of origin, and report any breaches and other cybersecurity incidents to Congress. El Small Business Cyber Training Act — Cosponsored by Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Jim Risch (R-ID), Maggie Hassan (D-NH), and Bill Cassidy (R-LA), the new law requires the SBA to establish a training program for small business development centers (SBDCs) to prepare counselors in cyber planning assistance. Specifically, the new law requires SBDCs to have employees certified in cyber strategy counseling for small businesses. A one-pager can be found here.
