Rubio Applauds Trump Administration’s Action to Give Americans Better Health Care Options
Miami, FL — Today, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) applauded the Trump administration’s actions to give hard-working Americans better health care options.
“President Trump’s actions will help millions of hard-working Americans have greater access to affordable health care coverage that best meets their needs,” Rubio said. “After the previous administration’s misguided policies stopped workers from using HRAs to purchase coverage, millions of Americans will once again be able to use employer-funded HRAs to pay for health insurance and out-of-pocket expenses.”
From 2010 to 2018, the proportion of workers at small businesses with three to 49 workers covered by an employer plan fell by more than 25 percent. The Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) final rule will allow an estimated 800,000 employers to give their workers tax-preferred funds to purchase health insurance for themselves and their families in the individual market, subject to certain conditions. This rule will also allow employers that offer employer-sponsored health insurance to also contribute up to $1,800 towards each employee’s HRA, which will help families cover their out-of-pocket costs. The Individual Coverage HRA will particularly benefit small and mid-sized employers that do not currently offer coverage or that face significant burdens offering a traditional group health plan to employees. HRAs were created by the George W. Bush administration, but the Obama Administration forbade workers from using funds in an HRA to pay for coverage.
