Rubio Applauds Senate Passage of G.I. Bill Expansion
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today applauded Senate passage of the Harry W. Colmery Veterans Educational Assistance Act, legislation that will reform and update G.I. eligibility for veterans. The bill will benefit many of the more than 1.5 million veterans in Florida and now heads to the president’s desk to be signed into law.
“While we can never fully repay our veterans for the sacrifices they have made protecting our country, we can ensure they have the educational tools needed to effectively re-enter civilian life,” said Rubio. “I am proud to be an original cosponsor of this bipartisan bill and look forward to it being signed into law.”
The bill makes essential reforms for reservists, Purple Heart recipients, veterans who face school closings during enrollment, and surviving family members. It also provides increased resources and authority for educational assistance to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs, computer programming and career technical training.
The legislation also enables veterans to use their G.I. Bill benefits at any point in their professional career. This is a change to current law that stipulates these benefits must used within 15 years.
