Rubio: Anniversary Of Washington Post Reporter’s Imprisonment Another Example Of Failed Negotiations With Iran
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) issued the following statement in advance of Wednesday’s one year anniversary of Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian’s imprisonment by the Iranian regime:
“The Iranian regime has just secured epic concessions that will enrich the mullahs, help them acquire more weapons and allow them to continue developing nuclear weapons, and somehow the Obama Administration could not manage to secure the release of several American hostages. The ongoing imprisonment and uncertainty surrounding several American citizens imprisoned or missing in Iran is one of the most shameful aspects of President Obama’s dealings with Iran.
“Jason Rezaian is the longest held international journalist by Iran, and he deserves to be free. He was unjustly imprisoned in notorious Evin Prison for over ten months before finally being charged with bogus crimes including espionage. Last week, a day before the Iran nuclear deal was reached, Jason was subjected to a closed-door hearing with only his Iranian regime-endorsed lawyer permitted in the room.
“It is unacceptable that the Obama Administration missed an opportunity to make the freedom of Jason, as well as Amir Hekmati and Saeed Abedini, and obtaining information about missing Floridian Robert Levinson, a priority in its negotiations with Iran. Jason should not be behind bars for his profession as a journalist, and he should be released unconditionally.”
