On Anniversary Of Devastating Earthquake, Rubio Stands With Haiti

Jan 12, 2016 | Comunicados de Prensa

Washington, D.C. U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues, released the following statement today commemorating the 6th anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Haiti:

“Six years later, it’s still impossible to understate just how much the earthquake changed the course of Haiti’s history and nearly plunged it into all-out chaos. Many lives were lost as a direct result of the earthquake, and many more afterwards because of incompetence, corruption and a wholly avoidable cholera outbreak that U.N. officials were in part responsible for. Three years ago, I visited Haiti and witnessed the spirit and determination of people committed to rising above these circumstances – dreams that sadly remain largely unrealized.

“Haiti faces great uncertainty this month as it races to hold an election on January 24th and transfer presidential power by February 7th as its constitution stipulates. It’s critical that the U.S. do all we can to ensure constitutional order is preserved and democracy can move forward. The U.S. will continue to stand with the Haitian people to assist this process and the ongoing recovery.”
