MEDIA ADVISORY: Senator Rubio To Speak At Unveiling Of Congressional Gold Medal For Borinqueneers

Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, April 13, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio will deliver remarks at the official unveiling of the Congressional Gold Medal for the 65th Infantry Regiment “Borinqueneers.” The Congressional Gold Medal was designated for the Borinqueneers in June of 2014 when President Obama signed a law that Rubio originally co-sponsored in the Senate.

The Borinqueneers were a segregated Hispanic unit, comprised of mostly Puerto Rican soldiers, who served in World War I, World War II and the Korean War.

Below is a timeline of Senator Rubio’s involvement in securing this honor for the Borinqueneers:

  • June 18, 2013: S. 1174 (113th), to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the 65th Infantry Regiment, known as the Borinqueneers, is introduced in the Senate and Rubio is an original co-sponsor.
  • May 22, 2014: El Senate passes the bill without amendment by Unanimous Consent.
  • June 10, 2014: Rubio attends the White House ceremony as President Barack Obama signs H.R. 1726 into law.
  • June 27, 2014: Rubio joins a bipartisan group of Senators in designating two individuals to serve as Liaisons to the U.S. Mint for the purpose of designing the Congressional Gold Medal.
  • August 5, 2014: Rubio honors the Borinqueneers at a ceremony in Orlando.
  • February 24, 2015: By this date, four Borinqueneers from Florida have passed away since the President signed the bill into law, so Rubio writes a letter to President Obama urging him to expedite the Congressional Gold Medal.
  • March 2, 2015: Following the death of another Borinqueneer, Rubio releases a statement urging President Obama to do all he can to make sure every living Borinqueneer receives his medal. 
  • April 11, 2015: After another Borinqueneer passes away, Rubio for the third time urges President Obama to expedite the process. 
  • June 10, 2015: On one year anniversary of Borinqueneers bill signing, Rubio again urges the president to expedite the Congressional Gold Medal.
  • June 16, 2015: As Borinqueneers’ Congressional Gold Medal Committee meets, Rubio encourages prompt completion of award.
  • January 26, 2016: Rubio honors another Borinqueneer who passes away before receiving his Medal.
