MEDIA ADVISORY: Rubio To Discuss Zika Virus At Miami Office
Washington, D.C. – Tomorrow, April 8, U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) will hold a press conference after a briefing with state, local and Puerto Rican officials on the Zika virus. The group will gather at his office in Miami to discuss current cases, prevention efforts and measures being taken to address public health concerns.
“Zika virus is impacting Florida, Puerto Rico and South America, and we must be prepared for what is predicted to be an even more explosive outbreak. This briefing with state and local officials will be helpful in determining what actions Congress should take to fight the virus and its outbreak,” Rubio said. “While I am reviewing the President’s emergency funding request and encouraged by the immediate actions the White House is beginning to take to spend unused Ebola funding, it is my hope that Congressional Republicans and the administration can come to an agreement on critical funding items before the weather gets even warmer, mosquitoes become even more prevalent and the risk of transmission becomes even greater.”
Earlier today, Rubio spoke with Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Burwell regarding the Zika virus in Florida. In January, in response to the Zika outbreak, Rubio asked the Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Gil Kerlikowske, about actions being taken to prepare for the outbreak and ensure that airports and seaports in Florida are properly staffed and equipped.
