On the strategy for handling COVID as we head into the winter season:
“I think we’ve now seen [that] if you look at every country in the world, the pattern is similar. There’s a spike, that’s followed by a drop [in cases]. It spikes, a lot of people get it, it gives them immunity, and then there’s not enough people to infect because they have immunity, at least for however long it lasts.
“I also think it’s a time for humility; there’s a lot we don’t know about. We don’t know how long that immunity lasts. We don’t know if natural immunity lasts for two years, five years, or six months.
“On top of that, you have people that are vaccinated. Right now, in Florida, I personally know people that have had two shots, a booster, and COVID all in the last 12 months. I’m not an expert, but I would tell you, based on what the experts say, that the chances of those people getting COVID anytime soon is not high. So, you look at that and you say, ‘Of course the numbers have dropped,’ and now they are going to surge in places that didn’t have a spike earlier.
“…You can shut down the whole country because of one case, but eventually, it’s going to get there because it’s a virus. All we’ve ever tried to do here — the goal has always not been COVID zero, the goal has been [to] delay getting COVID as long as possible, because the longer you can delay it, the more treatments, the more options, [and] the more we know about it.
“What I do hope the strategy isn’t going to be is one that’s counterproductive, that, in essence, forces people to do things that we don’t need to do. Because all that does is create more strife, more economic pain, and, frankly, more division in the country.”
On the need for capitalism to serve America’s interests, and not China’s:
“We made a big mistake 20 years ago when we admitted China to the World Trade Organization, because that was based on the notion that we were going to export capitalism and it would change China, when in fact it’s China that’s changed capitalism.
“And so today we have American corporations who, in order, to make billions of dollars, have no problem using slaves in China, have no problem sending factories over there and jobs over there, and I think…that’s something Republicans need to point to.
“We need to have capitalism — not socialism. But it has to be a capitalism that’s good for Americans.”
On efforts to kill Rubio’s Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act:
“Right now, as I speak to you, we’ve got CEOs and companies who are lobbying to kill my Uyghur slave labor bill. It basically says that if you buy products that are made in Xinjiang, we are going to presume that they’re made by slaves. They’re working quietly to kill it.
“We’ve got, basically, congressional leaders [who] are willing to kill the defense bill in order to not pass a bill that has my amendment in it. It’s outrageous.”
