Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined Clay Travis on Outkick the Coverage to discuss Super Bowl LV in Tampa, Name, Image, Likeness legislation, and more. See below for highlights.
On Senator Rubio’s love for the Miami Dolphins and his feelings toward Tom Brady:
“Now that [Tom Brady] plays in the NFC, he’s not our problem… so it’s like a win for us. We got him out of the division in the conference and it helped a Florida team and [he] went to play for a great coach. It’s the perfect situation to be in, and for Florida it’s a double win: we host the Super Bowl albeit under these COVID conditions, and we have a team playing in their home stadium in the Super Bowl, so it’s great.
“I rooted against the Patriots when he was their quarterback and they won a lot of games. I’m at the stage now, after years you sort of get this grudging acceptance and appreciation for the excellence that he puts into it.”
On the Tampa Bay Buccaneers:
“Tampa Bay avoids a lot of negative plays, they’re one of the top five teams avoiding negative plays on offense. And their defense is really underrated with Todd Bowles, you saw what they did last week. They create a lot of havoc and negative plays for the other team, and they did it last week without both of their starting safeties, including our young superstar, Winfield didn’t even play.”
On Name, Image, and Likeness legislation in the Senate:
“I like the bill we put forward… I think the NCAA is going to have to step up and do it, and because already Florida has a law that’s going to take effect next year. Already California, other states, so this is a done deal. The question is now whether there’s going to be a uniform standard or not across the country, and do it in a way where we’re not talking about getting Nike commercials.
“You’re going to sell autographs, you’re going to sell jerseys, you’re going to sell the ability to sign something for kids and make some money off of it — I think these athletes should be allowed to do that, someone is making money off of this name image, and likeness.”
On Senator Rubio’s predictions for the Super Bowl:
“I think the Bucs are going to win… the loss of their tackle for Kansas City is going to be a real problem for them. I think the Tampa Bay defense is underrated. They’re going to create a couple negative plays, and I think they’re going to win 27-24. I think the MVP is going to be, shockingly enough, somebody on the defensive side of the ball for Tampa Bay. I don’t know who it’s going to be that steps up, but I think someone on the defensive side is going to make a couple big plays that’ll help win that game for them. And that’s what you have to do with a team like Kansas City. I’ll warn you though, if the Bucs go up 21-nothing, it won’t matter because Kansas City is always behind.”
