Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Representatives Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), Maria Elvira Salazar (R-FL), and Carlos Gimenez (R-FL) issued the following joint statement commemorating 25 years since the brutal murder of the Brothers to the Rescue humanitarian mission. Earlier this month, during an event hosted by the Inspire America Foundation in South Florida, Senator Rubio honored the memory and valor of these three courageous American citizens and one U.S. legal resident.  

“Today, we mark twenty-five years since the brutal murder of four innocent and courageous humanitarians: Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña, and Pablo Morales. Our prayers are with the families and friends of these four martyrs who were taken from them by this cowardly and barbaric act of terrorism.  

The Castro regime must be held accountable for its crimes – specifically, Raúl Castro, who ordered this attack. In addition to Castro, the three individuals who were previously indicted by a U.S. federal court, General Rubén Martínez Puente, Lorenzo Alberto Pérez-Pérez, and Francisco Pérez-Pérez, must be brought to justice. This horrendous attack spurred Congress to codify sanctions against the Castro regime, ensuring that U.S. dollars do not enrich a murderous dictatorship that oppresses the Cuban people and threatens our national security interests abroad.

We will not let the world forget the horror that occurred on February 24, 1996, nor will we remain silent while some individuals attempt to gloss over the true despotic nature of the Cuban dictatorship. The regime has shown repeatedly that it harbors no respect for human life, nor for basic human rights. As such, we remain committed to demand justice for the regime’s victims, including Carlos, Armando, Mario, and Pablo, so long as those responsible continue to walk the earth.

Every year that passes serves as a reminder that this murderous, narco-trafficking, anti-American regime has not changed. We must stay the course and refuse to legitimize or fund the regime’s machinery of oppression. Instead, we must maintain the pressure and remain in strong solidarity with the Cuban people.”

RUBIO SE UNE A REPRESENTANTES DE EE.UU. HONRANDO LA VIDA DE LOS HERMANOS AL RESCATE 

Washington, D.C. – El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL) y los representantes Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL), María Elvira Salazar (R-FL) y Carlos Giménez (R-FL) emitieron el siguiente comunicado en conmemoración de los 25 años tras el brutal asesinato de los integrantes de la misión humanitaria Hermanos al Rescate. A principios de este mes, durante un evento organizado por la Fundación Inspire América, el Senador Rubio honró la memoria y la valentía de estos tres ciudadanos estadounidenses y un residente legal de EE. UU.

“Hoy 24 de febrero se cumplen veinticinco años del asesinato de cuatro hombres inocentes: Carlos Costa, Armando Alejandre Jr., Mario de la Peña y Pablo Morales. Nuestras oraciones siempre estarán con los familiares y amigos de estos cuatro mártires quienes fueron arrebatados por este acto cobarde y barbárico de terrorismo. 

“El régimen Castrista debe enfrentar consecuencias por sus actos criminales. Específicamente el asesino Raúl Castro quien ordenó esta atrocidad, así como los tres individuos ya imputados en una Corte Federal de los Estados Unidos: el general Rubén Martínez Puente, y los pilotos de combate Lorenzo Alberto Pérez-Pérez y Francisco Pérez-Pérez. Todos ellos deben ser llevados ante la justicia. Precisamente, fue este acto el que impulsó al Congreso de EE.UU. a codificar las sanciones contra el régimen comunista de los Castro garantizando que dólares de EE.UU. no enriquecieran a la vil y asesina dictadura que reprime al pueblo cubano y amenaza la seguridad nacional de los Estados Unidos. 

“No permitiremos que el mundo olvide la masacre del 24 de febrero de 1996, ni permaneceremos en silencio mientras algunos individuos intentan obviar la verdadera déspota naturaleza de la dictadura cubana. El régimen ha demostrado repetidamente que no respeta la vida humana ni los derechos humanos más básicos. Mientras que los asesinos responsables sigan caminando sobre la faz de la tierra seguiremos exigiendo justicia para las víctimas del régimen: Carlos, Armando, Mario y Pablo.  

“Cada año que pasa nos sirve como recordatorio que este régimen asesino, narcoterrorista y anti-americano no ha cambiado en lo absoluto. Debemos mantener nuestro compromiso con la libertad y la democracia de Cuba y negarnos a legitimar o financiar el aparato represivo de la dictadura. Nuestra obligación es mantener la presión y solidarizarnos aún más con el pueblo cubano y sus ansias de ser libres.”
