Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) and Congresswoman Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR) in introducing a bicameral resolution commemorating the 500th anniversary of the founding of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Rubio is the Ranking Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
“As we commemorate the 500th anniversary of the founding of the City of San Juan, I’m proud to join my fellow Americans in Puerto Rico as they celebrate the founding of the oldest city in our nation,” Rubio said. “This resolution pays tribute to the city’s legacy, which remains a historic gem for all American citizens.”

“San Juan was founded in 1521, making it the oldest continuously inhabited city established by Europeans in the United States,” González-Colón said. Today, Puerto Rico’s capital city is a major economic and trade center, home to one of the top 25 busiest container ports in the Nation. San Juan is also known for its rich culture and vibrant history, perhaps best encapsulated by its iconic cobblestone streets and the massive system of fortifications built by Spanish military engineers between the 16th and 18th centuries to defend the city. I was proud to introduce a bipartisan resolution in the U.S. House of Representatives to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the founding of San Juan, and want to thank Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio for introducing a companion version in the Senate.”

Rubio es el Miembro de Más Alto Rango del Subcomité sobre Hemisferio Occidental, Crimen Transnacional, Seguridad Civil, Democracia, Derechos Humanos y Asuntos Globales de la Mujer.
“Al conmemorar el aniversario número 500 de la fundación de la Ciudad de San Juan, me enorgullece unirme a mis compatriotas estadounidenses en Puerto Rico en celebrar la fundación de la ciudad más antigua de nuestra nación,” Rubio dijo. “Esta resolución rinde homenaje al legado de esta hermosa ciudad, la cual sigue siendo una joya histórica para todos los ciudadanos americanos”.
“Estoy orgulloso de unirme a mis colegas para celebrar el 500º aniversario de la ciudad capital de Puerto Rico, San Juan,” Scott dijo. Como gobernador de Florida y ahora como Senador, he tenido la oportunidad de visitar Puerto Rico varias veces y ver de primera mano la riqueza de su cultura, la gente maravillosa y la belleza que la isla tiene para ofrecer. Me enorgullece ser la voz de Puerto Rico en el Senado de los Estados Unidos y unirme a la Congresista González-Colón y al Senador Rubio para celebrar este importante hito para nuestros hermanos y hermanas en la isla. “San Juan fue fundada en el año 1521, lo que la convierte en la ciudad habitada más antigua establecida por los europeos en los Estados Unidos,” González-Colón dijo. “Hoy, la ciudad capital de Puerto Rico es un principal centro económico y de comercio, hogar de uno de los 25 puertos de contenedores más activos de la nación. San Juan, también conocida como la Ciudad Amurallada, se caracteriza por su rica cultura y su vibrante historia, quizás mejor representada por sus icónicas calles adoquinadas y el masivo sistema de fortificaciones construido por ingenieros militares españoles entre los siglos XVI y XVIII con el propósito de defender la ciudad. Me enorgullece haber presentado una resolución bipartita en la Cámara de Representantes federal para conmemorar los 500 años de la fundación de San Juan, y agradezco a los senadores Rick Scott y Marco Rubio por presentar esta versión en el Senado”.
