Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today released a video statement after reports revealed that red tide was confirmed in Miami-Dade County.

“This has been a horrible summer for Florida – first with the algae, and then the red tide in the southwest in Tampa Bay, it even reached the Panhandle, and now stories about it getting to Palm Beach, Broward and Miami Beach. Now, it’s true red tide’s been around forever, but never this level of intensity. Never this reach. There’s obviously something driving it, and that’s why we’re doing everything we can here to push research to understand the causes of it, to detect it early. But ultimately, we’ve got to fix our water problems in Florida. It’s the number one issue facing the state, and that’s why my number one priority for the state is Everglades restoration. And there isn’t a day that goes by that we don’t do something on it in a bipartisan way. We’ve got to keep pushing on that. It’s ultimately what’s going to help us solve the algae problem, and maybe the red tide problem.”
In August, Rubio surveyed red tide damage and held a roundtable with local officials in Captiva. Recently, he introduced the South Florida Clean Coastal Waters Act, legislation that would direct the Interagency Task Force on Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) to assess the causes and consequences of HABs in Lake Okeechobee and around Florida’s south and southwestern coast to determine the federal resources available to solve these challenges. He also recently secured $1 million of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) funds for areas affected by harmful algal blooms. Es por eso que la calidad de nuestra agua es la prioridad número uno que tenemos que tener en este estado. Para mí, cada día lo dedicamos a más dinero para hacer más investigaciones sobre esto y prevenirlo. Eventualmente tenemos que arreglar el sistema de los Everglades y es por eso que yo me he manifestado en toda ocasión a favor de restaurar los Everglades lo más pronto posible, es mi prioridad número uno para el estado de la Florida y lo seguirá siendo”.
