Today, my family and I join Christians in America and around the world in marking Ash Wednesday. Lent is a time of personal reflection, devotion, repentance, charity and sacrifice as we call to mind Jesus’ suffering on our behalf. During this Lenten Season, we are especially mindful of those Christians around the world unable to freely practice their faith. We especially pray for those facing horrific persecution and genocide in Iraq and Syria, where Christians who still speak Aramaic, the language of Jesus himself, are the targets of extreme violence and oppression. Our prayers are with all believers who truly ‘take up the cross’ in the face of unimaginable evil. We look with anticipation toward the Resurrection celebration that awaits on Easter Sunday.
