Ahead of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Rubio & Colleagues Encourage POTUS to Combat Anti-Semitism
Washington, D.C.— U.S. Senators Marco Rubio (R-FL) and Bob Menendez (D-NJ) led a bipartisan group of senators in encouraging President Trump to publicly commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2018, and to nominate a candidate to the vacant position of Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism at the State Department.
El texto de la carta en inglés está aquí. is below:
Dear Mr. President:
January 27, 2018, marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Each year, this day provides an opportunity for the international community to come together and forcefully condemn the acts of the brutal Nazi regime and its collaborators that resulted in the slaughter of one-third of the world’s entire Jewish community and millions from other minority groups.
As we remember the millions of innocent lives—family members, community and religious leaders— who were murdered, we reaffirm our commitment to combating the hateful forces that lead to their deaths. Anti-Semitism, bigotry, discrimination, and hatred permeated throughout many European societies, and ultimately found champions in elected government officials who translated hateful beliefs into hateful acts, including ghettos, death marches, concentration camps, and other policies aimed at systematically destroying an entire people.
Today, we are witnessing an alarming rise of anti-Semitism around the world, including in the United States. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, there were 684 anti-Semitic hate crime incidents in 2016, an increase from 2015. Reporting for 2017 indicates a continued rise of attacks throughout the country. Anti-Semitism has also been on the rise across Europe. This sad reality should move us to rededicate ourselves to eradicating this form of evil from the world for good. History offers a brutal lesson for nations that fail to combat anti-Semitism and bigotry.
We encourage you to publicly commemorate International Holocaust Remembrance Day, the six million Jews whose lives were taken, and the millions of others from persecuted groups who perished, and to unequivocally condemn anti-Semitism in all its forms. We also encourage you to nominate a candidate for the Congressionally-mandated position of Special Envoy to Combat Anti-Semitism at the State Department, which remains vacant. Nominating a Special Envoy would be a clear indication of the seriousness with which the U.S. government takes the issue of rising anti-Semitism.
Thank you for your time and attention to this important matter.
