English/Español: After Rubio’s Criticism, State Department Recognizes China as State Sponsor of Human Trafficking
Following criticism from U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), the U.S. State Department updated its 2022 Trafficking in Persons Report to include the People’s Republic of China (PRC) as a state sponsor of human trafficking.
- “It defies belief that China was ‘inadvertently’ left off the list. The Chinese Communist Party is a genocidal regime that kidnaps Uyghurs living abroad to force them to return.
- “The Biden Administration needs to do better, especially as it enforces my Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act. We should not be giving Beijing the benefit of the doubt or pulling our punches.” — U.S. Senator Rubio
The Biden Administration’s correction comes less than 24 hours after Rubio called the omission “unacceptable and cowardly.”
Looking forward … Rubio is pushing bipartisan legislation to reauthorize and enhance critical programming, policy, and funding essential to the United States’ efforts to combat human trafficking across the world.
