Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today issued a statement after the U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions against members of a corruption network illegally enriching themselves through the Venezuelan regime’s food subsidy known as the Local Committees for Supply and Production (Los Comités Locales de Abastecimiento y Producción or CLAP). The new sanctions target Alex Nain Saab Moran, Alvaro Enrique Pulido Vargas, Emmanuel Enrique Rubio Gonzalez, Walter Jacob Gavidia Flores, Yosser Daniel Gavidia Flores, Yosser Daniel Gavidia Flores, Yoswal Alexander Gavidia Flores, Jose Gregorio Vielma Mora, Shadi Nain Saab Certain, Isham Ali Saab Certain, and Mariana Andrea Staudinger Lemoine.
“The Maduro regime and its cronies illegally profited from the suffering of the Venezuelan people by laundering hundreds of millions of dollars from the CLAP food subsidy program,” Rubio said. “Following the Cuban regime’s model, the Venezuelan dictatorship used the CLAP food box as a political weapon to control the livelihood and starve the Venezuelan people. I thank the administration for their continuous support to the cause of democracy in Venezuela and stability in the Western Hemisphere.”
Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
