English/ Español: Rubio Joins Colleagues in Reintroducing Legislation to Support Displaced Venezuelans
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) joined Senators Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Patrick Leahy (D-VT) and Cory Booker (D-NJ) in introducing the Venezuela Temporary Protected Status Act of 2021, a bill to grant Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for eligible Venezuelans currently in the U.S. who fled the Maduro regime’s man-made crisis. Thanks to Rubio’s earlier efforts, eligible Venezuelan nationals currently in the U.S. now have Deferred Enforced Departure (DED) status that allows them to live and work legally in the U.S. for the next 18 months.
TPS, granted by executive action or through additional legislation, would reinforce the DED status that allows eligible Venezuelan nationals currently in the U.S. to live and work here for the next 18 months. Rubio was the only Senate Republican to originally co-sponsor the Venezuela Temporary Protected Status and Asylum Assistance Act of 2019. An authority Congress granted to the executive through the Immigration Act of 1990, TPS is a temporary, renewable designation that provides relief from deportation and access to a work permit for foreign nationals from certain countries who are unable to safely return to their home country due to natural disasters, armed conflicts, or other extraordinary conditions.
“Former President Trump’s decision to grant DED was an incredibly important action to protect vulnerable Venezuelans, and I was proud to work with him to deliver this much needed assurance,” Rubio said. “A stable and prosperous Venezuela is critical to our national interests, and providing DED was an important step towards easing the largest migratory crisis in our hemisphere. I remain committed to working with my colleagues, and the administration, to continue to protect this population as long as the Maduro threat remains. I urge the Biden Administration to support our efforts to bring stability for Venezuelans.”
Rubio is the Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues.
