After such a difficult weekend for the Nicaraguan people, I once again join the Nicaraguan-American community in repudiating the Ortega and Murillo regime while redoubling our efforts for free and fair elections. A critically important step was taken this week when President Biden signed my bipartisan Reinforcing Nicaragua’s Adherence to Conditions for Electoral Reform (RENACER) Act into law…
The RENACER Act seeks to impose a cost on the individuals who directly or indirectly obstructed the conditions necessary for free, fair and transparent elections to be held in Nicaragua—including the regime officials who were complicit in this scheme.
The RENACER Act also requires a report detailing acts of corruption by members of the Nicaraguan armed forces, as well as a compilation of all human rights abuses, torture, and sexual violence directed against Nicaraguans and indigenous communities. Likewise, the bill would implement efforts to strengthen Nicaragua’s free press and freedom of expression in the nation at a time when the regime openly represses and censors voices of dissent. Since Nicaragua no longer has a democratic government, the RENACER Act urges the president of the United States to review the Central American nation’s participation in the Dominican Republic-Central America-United States (CAFTA-DR) free trade agreement.
The authoritarian dynasty of Ortega and Murillo—as well as their thugs—must know that their role in directing the sham elections in Nicaragua will come at a high price.

Después de un fin de semana tan doloroso para el pueblo nicaragüense, me sumo una vez más a la comunidad nicaragüense-estadounidense en el repudio al régimen de Ortega y Murillo, a la vez que duplicamos nuestros esfuerzos en favor de unas elecciones libres y justas.
Esta semana dimos un paso muy importante cuando el presidente Biden firmó mi ley bipartidista de Fortalecimiento y Adhesión de Nicaragua a las Condiciones para la Reforma Electoral (RENACER)…
La Ley RENACER busca que se haga pagar a los individuos que directa o indirectamente obstruyeron las condiciones necesarias para que se celebraran elecciones libres, justas y transparentes en Nicaragua, incluyendo los funcionarios del régimen que fueron cómplices de este fraude.
La Ley RENACER también exige un estudio detallado de los actos de corrupción de los miembros de las fuerzas armadas nicaragüenses, así como una recopilación de todos los abusos contra los derechos humanos, la tortura y la violencia sexual dirigidos contra los nicaragüenses y las comunidades indígenas.
Paralelamente, el proyecto de ley implementaría iniciativas para fortalecer la libertad de prensa y de expresión en Nicaragua, en un momento en que el régimen reprime y censura abiertamente las voces de la disidencia. Dado que Nicaragua no tiene un gobierno democrático, la Ley RENACER insta al presidente de Estados Unidos a revisar la participación de la nación centroamericana en el acuerdo de libre comercio República Dominicana-Centroamérica-Estados Unidos (CAFTA-DR).
