During Official Trip to Panama, Rubio Meets with President Varela and Vice President De Saint Malo to Discuss Joint Security Cooperation and the Crisis in Venezuela
Panama City, Panama – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations’ Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues, traveled to the Republic of Panama to meet with President Juan Carlos Varela and Vice President Isabel de Saint Malo. They discussed the important role of the Lima Group in resolving the crisis in Venezuela. Rubio also toured the Panama Canal and received a briefing by diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Panama City.
“Panama and the U.S. share a strong diplomatic relationship, and I was glad to reiterate my commitment to advocating for democracy throughout the Western Hemisphere,” said Rubio. “I was pleased to meet with Panamanian government officials and our diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Panama City. I urged President Varela and Vice President de Saint Malo to work with our regional allies on formalizing our security partnership to confront the many challenges we face. Additionally, we discussed the urgent need to do more to provide humanitarian relief to the Venezuelan people and apply additional pressure on the Maduro regime.”
In April, Rubio spoke on the Senate floor to outline actions the United States and its partners must take to hasten the emergence of a post-Maduro Venezuela and restore democracy to the country. On Monday, Rubio met with U.S. diplomats and Costa Rican government officials to discuss their leadership in the Lima group, the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, bilateral relations, and the fight against transnational criminal organizations.

Ciudad de Panamá, Panamá – El senador estadounidense Marco Rubio (R-FL), Presidente del Subcomité del Hemisferio Occidental, Delincuencia Transnacional, Seguridad Civil, Democracia, Derechos Humanos y Asuntos Mundiales de la Mujer del Comité de Relaciones Exteriores del Senado, viajó a la República de Panamá para reunirse con el presidente Juan Carlos Varela y la vicepresidenta Isabel de Saint Malo. Hablaron del importante rol del Grupo de Lima en resolver la crisis de Venezuela. Rubio también recorrió el Canal de Panamá y recibió una conferencia por parte de diplomáticos en la Embajada de los Estados Unidos en la ciudad de Panamá.
“Panamá y EE. UU. comparten una fuerte relación diplomática, me complació reiterar mi compromiso de promover la democracia en todo el Hemisferio Occidental”, dijo Rubio. “Me agrado reunirme con funcionarios del gobierno panameño y con nuestros diplomáticos en la Embajada de los Estados Unidos en la Ciudad de Panamá. Insté al presidente Varela y a la vicepresidenta de Saint Malo a trabajar con nuestros aliados regionales y formalizar lazos de seguridad para confrontar los tantos desafíos que afrontamos. También discutimos la urgente necesidad de hacer más para poder proporcionarle ayuda humanitaria al pueblo venezolano y aplicar más presión sobre el régimen de Maduro.
En abril, Rubio habló en el pleno del senado para detallar las acciones que los Estados Unidos y sus aliados deben emprender para acelerar el surgimiento de una Venezuela post-Maduro y la restauración de la democracia en el país. El lunes pasado, Rubio se reunió con diplomáticos estadounidenses y con funcionarios del gobierno de Costa Rica para hablar de su liderazgo en el Grupo de Lima, la crisis actual en Venezuela y las relaciones bilaterales.
