Panama City, Panama – U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL), Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations’ Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Transnational Crime, Civilian Security, Democracy, Human Rights, and Global Women’s Issues, traveled to the Republic of Panama to meet with President Juan Carlos Varela and Vice President Isabel de Saint Malo. They discussed the important role of the Lima Group in resolving the crisis in Venezuela. Rubio also toured the Panama Canal and received a briefing by diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Panama City.
“Panama and the U.S. share a strong diplomatic relationship, and I was glad to reiterate my commitment to advocating for democracy throughout the Western Hemisphere,” said Rubio. “I was pleased to meet with Panamanian government officials and our diplomats at the U.S. Embassy in Panama City. I urged President Varela and Vice President de Saint Malo to work with our regional allies on formalizing our security partnership to confront the many challenges we face. Additionally, we discussed the urgent need to do more to provide humanitarian relief to the Venezuelan people and apply additional pressure on the Maduro regime.”
In April, Rubio spoke on the Senate floor to outline actions the United States and its partners must take to hasten the emergence of a post-Maduro Venezuela and restore democracy to the country. On Monday, Rubio met with U.S. diplomats and Costa Rican government officials to discuss their leadership in the Lima group, the ongoing crisis in Venezuela, bilateral relations, and the fight against transnational criminal organizations.
