Fighting for Florida
This morning, Senator Rubio met with two former presidents of El Salvador in his Washington office. The former presidents in attendance were Francisco Flores and Aramando Calderon Sol. As the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, Peace Corps and Global Narcotics Affairs, this meeting is part of Marco’s continued efforts to engage our friends and allies in the Western Hemisphere.
The discussion centered on the U.S.-El Salvador relationship, with the former presidents highlighting the alliance as a crucial one in helping El Salvador build a lasting democracy based on the rule of law and transparency. They also discussed the threat of narco-trafficking to El Salvador and the entire region, the influence of Cuba and Venezuela in the region and the Sandinistas’ routine constitutional violations and how they impact the region as a whole. They also discussed the pending nomination of Mari Carmen Aponte to be U.S. ambassador to El Salvador.
